7 Reasons to Wash All Your Makeup Off

Wash all your makeup off before you go to bed. It’s skincare advice you’ve probably heard your entire life. And if we had to guess, we’d say you’ve probably ignored said advice a few times before. (You may have even ignored it more times than you’d like to admit.) However, today we’re going to make sure you always remove your makeup at the end of the day before you sleepily crawl into bed. Here are seven reasons to wash all your makeup off…

1. You’ll break out if you don’t cleanse.

Going to bed with your face covered in foundation, concealer, powder, mascara, and other products is never a good idea. Not to mention, if you haven’t cleansed your skin, you aren’t removing the dirt and dead skin cells that are on your face at the end of the day. By leaving all of this on your face, it only leads to clogged pores, which ultimately results in breakouts. Not good if you’re dreaming of clear skin!

To ensure your skin stays clear (or to get it to clear up), make sure you take the time to properly remove all of your makeup every day. Use a cleanser to clean your face of all traces of makeup, dirt, and oil. Then, follow it up with a moisturizer so your skin can stay hydrated, soft, and supple.

2. Sleeping with your makeup on can increase signs of aging.

Letting your makeup, dirt, and oil clog up your pores is never a good thing. In fact, it can break down your skin’s barrier, which can lead to premature signs of aging. And who wants to deal with fine lines and wrinkles, right? Well, if your goal is to keep your skin looking youthful, you’ll want to make sure you wash all your makeup off.

Because the makeup you wear attracts free radicals, skipping a cleanse allows them to sit on your skin overnight, which can do a lot of damage. In fact, free radicals break down collagen and ultimately speeds up the aging process. Those fine lines around your eyes will become even more noticeable, as will any other wrinkles that are already showing on your face.

3. Not washing your makeup off could lead to a dull complexion.

Cleansing your skin and exfoliating regularly is the best way to reveal new skin cells by sloughing off the dead ones that have built up. When dead skin cells and oil are left to sit on the skin, your complexion begins to look dull and tired. You can prevent that and encourage a natural glow by keeping your skin clean. Incorporate a gentle scrub into your skincare routine for an added benefit and to give your skin an immediate glow.

4. Your skin could become irritated if products aren’t removed.

The makeup we use on a daily basis can contain a lot of ingredients that could irritate our skin. There are dyes, perfumes, and more in foundations, powders, and other products. By leaving them on the skin for an extended period, you risk your skin becoming irritated. This is especially true for those who already have sensitive skin or have rosacea. Not removing your eye makeup before bed can also lead to irritation. You might wake up in the morning to find your eyes are red and itchy. They could even develop an infection. It’s all the more reason to wash all your makeup off before hitting the hay.

5. Leftover makeup can clog oil glands and hair follicles.

Not only can leaving eye makeup on while you sleep lead to infections such as styes, it can even clog the oil glands and hair follicles on your eyelids. Although tiny, when these glands and follicles become clogged, it will cause small bumps to surface on the skin. Make sure you wash all your eye makeup off before bed so you don’t have to worry about this kind of irritation forming.

6. Not cleansing your face can lead to dryness.

Odds are, you’ve applied a lip product that felt very drying, like a matte or long-wearing lipstick. Imagine what that would do to your lips if it wasn’t washed off before going to bed. Your lips would likely be feeling pretty dry and cracked the next morning when you wake up. It’s not a good look for anyone, plus it’s very uncomfortable. The same goes for leaving foundations or other products on. This could prevent your skin from being properly nourished and hydrated. You might notice dry patches appearing on your skin as a result.

Plus, leaving your mascara on overnight can actually cause your eyelashes to become brittle. Mascara can be very drying and leaving it on while you sleep isn’t going to promote long, healthy lashes. Make sure you gently removing all traces of eye makeup each and every night.

7. Failing to properly remove makeup can prevent skincare products from being absorbed.

If you’re taking the time to use skincare products such as serums and other treatments, you want to make sure your skin is actually absorbing them. And you skin is unable to do that if you aren’t properly removing all of your makeup first. That makeup essentially acts as a barrier and makes it harder for your skin to absorb all the good-for-you ingredients your products contain. And if your skin can’t absorb those products, they aren’t really doing their job.

Be sure to completely cleanse your skin before applying products such as serums, treatments, masks, and moisturizers. This will help your skin to better absorb the products you use so you can see more radiant, healthy skin in no time at all.
