How Pollutants Are Damaging Your Skin and What You Can Do About It

Pollution can cause a lot of damage to our bodies, including our skin. The free radicals in the environment don’t just sit on top of our skin, but they actually get absorbed into the deeper layers of the epidermis, which is what causes so much damage. The pollutants we encounter on a daily basis can cause a variety of issues: accelerated signs of aging, inflammation, uneven skin tone, and dark spots. It can also exacerbate skin conditions such as acne and rosacea and even cause skin cancer.

We encounter pollution all the time, whether we’re outdoors or relaxing inside. It’s impossible to avoid! How can we deal with it? Fortunately, we have some tips to help you protect your skin and keep it looking and feeling healthy…

Outdoor Pollutants

Outdoor pollutants are everywhere. There’s just no way to escape it. Pollutants from fires, cars, construction sites, and other sources are released into the atmosphere on a daily basis. Each one can have a negative impact on your beautiful skin. The free radicals we come across just walking down the street can leave our skin looking dull and uneven, but and could even trigger acne and rosacea flare-ups.

Besides the obvious effects of pollutants, there are even more serious long-term issues we’re facing. Pollutants can lead to the development skin cancer or other degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Indoor Pollutants

Did you think your skin only encountered pollutants outdoors? Unfortunately, that’s simply not true! We continue to encounter pollutants indoors when we come home at the end of the day. For example, creosote from stoves and fireplaces, as well as foam insulation can wreak havoc on our skin as well. These sources of pollutants can potentially cause dry, irritated skin.

So, what are we to do about those indoor pollutants? The best thing you can do is to improve ventilation within your home. Allow fresh air to come in from outdoors and keep the humidity low inside. Also, look for products that contain low or no formaldehyde. It’s not an ingredient you want a lot of around your home!

How to Prevent Pollutants from Damaging Your Skin

To protect your skin from the damaging effects of pollutants, make sure you’re cleansing your face regularly. You should be washing your face morning and night to remove bacteria, oil, makeup, and those pesky pollutants. Take extra care to cleanse your skin at nighttime to remove the environmental pollutants you encountered during the day.

Next, you want to restore your skin and repair the damage the pollutants have caused. A great way to do this is by using a product that is high in antioxidants, such as Yon-Ka’s Vital Defense. This vitamin-enriched day cream defends and protects your skin from aging, environmental pollution, and free radical damage to help it recover its original radiance, softness, and vitality.  To complete the program, add Nutri Defense to boost the natural defenses of the skin, soothe, and repair.

Finally, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen on a daily basis. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from damage from the sun. Even if it’s cloudy outside, you can still experience the effects of the sun’s harmful rays, so be sure to wear your SPF every day.
