Masking is one of those extra-credit skincare routines that most people tend to dabble in reactively instead of proactively. The truth is that masks can be real wonder products when you use them correctly. It’s important to set aside some “me time” to use them. Beauty mavens will have no problem with this, because indulging is the very best part of beauty after all, however most of us will admit that finding the time to take special good care of our skin can be a real challenge.
Here are a few ways to not only find the time to get masking, but how to make the very best of your mask experience…
Many people apply masks with their fingers, but I prefer to put a serving onto the back of my hand, mix it up with a flat foundation brush and then “paint” it into place. It feels like heaven, brush bristles being much more gentle than my fingers, and it allows me to get the mask into all the right areas like nose creases, marionette lines, etc. I also find that I’m able to keep my masks lasting longer in the tube or jar because brushing them on is more efficient than globbing them on with my fingers. Bonus: it feels like a spa treatment and really elevates the whole experience.
If you really find yourself pressed for time, some of my favorite masks are intended to be worn overnight. I find this works best for hydrating treatments which you can slather on in lieu of your serum or night cream. Overnight masks soak in completely so there’s no worry about ruining your pillow case – and they do their best work while you sleep, helping you to wake up to plumped-up skin that is refreshed and moisturized. Isn’t that the true definition of beauty sleep?
To keep clay masks active and comfortable a toner can make a real difference in how a mask performs. This simple act of adding several mists of an essential oil rich toner will also help to calm ad relax you from head to toe.
All in all, masking is one of my favorite skincare indulgences. These tricks keep me in a rhythm which means my face looks its absolute best and I get to pamper myself once in awhile.
If you’re as much of a mask fan as me, I’d love to hear about some of your favorites and how you work the ritual into your routine!
