A Brief History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year, became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Created Jarvis in 1908, Mother’s Day grew out of the 19^th century tradition of Mother’s’ Day Work Clubs.

In the years before the Civil War, a woman named Ann Reeves Jarvis started the first club to help teach local women the ins and outs of motherhood. The clubs eventually became popular around the country.

In 1870, Julia Ward Howe released the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” calling mothers across America to unite in promoting world peace. A few years later, Ward campaigned to make Mother’s Peace Day an official holiday to be celebrated every June 2^nd.

By the 1900s, Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, had begun her own campaign to create a national holiday honoring the sacrifices mothers make for their children. The first official Mother’s Day celebration was held at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908. By 1912, many states had adopted the tradition and Mother’s Day was officially established as a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
