Best Facial for Your Skin Type

Getting a facial can be an effective way to address skin concerns and discover new products that improve the condition of your skin. But anyone that’s ever glanced at a spa menu knows that facials aren’t a one size fits all service. It’s important to know which is the best facial for your skin type so that you avoid leaving the spa looking worse than when you walked in.

Oily Skin

Those with oily skin tend to have clogged pores from a buildup of oil, makeup and environmental debris. A facial that includes an exfoliating treatment will help eliminate congestion and is usually followed by extractions. “Extractions” refers to the professional removal of blackheads, or hardened oil buildup in pores that has oxidized (darkened) from exposure to sunlight. Facials that include these steps are usually listed as “deep cleansing” or recommended for those with acne.

Dry Skin

Soothe flaky, irritated skin with a hydrating facial formulated for those with dry skin. Look for a facial that includes gentle exfoliation (to buff away flaky skin and dry patches) and a moisturizing mask. The goal of your facial should be to replenish lost moisture and this can be done with the use of oils and targeted treatments that penetrate skin.  The gold standard hydrating treatment Hydralessence Facial is perfect for dehydrated skin at any age or skin type.

Sensitive Skin

Choosing a facial when you have sensitive skin can be scary! Since certain ingredients may cause irritation and redness, it’s important to discuss any allergies or known irritants with your aesthetician before starting your treatment. Avoid any facials that include salicylic or glycolic acid, harsh exfoliation or strong fragrances — all of which can trigger sensitivity.

Combination Skin

Maybe you have an oily t-zone but cheeks fall on the drier side. This means you have combination skin and require a facial that balances your complexion. You will still want a treatment that includes exfoliation and extractions (even if they are limited to a certain area) but should also look for steps that soothe, such as a hydrating mask that will help your skin lock in moisture.

Mature Skin

If your skin is mature or showing signs of aging, you are also bringing another skin concern to the table. Mature skin tends to also be oily, sensitive or dry so your facial will need to address your skin type as well as your anti-aging needs. Choose a facial that targets your skin type and then choose an add-on treatment, such as microdermabrasion, that will diminish fine lines and dark spots.
