Benefits of Green Smoothies Plus a Bonus Recipe

A green smoothie is a smoothie that is blended with fresh, leafy, dark green vegetables. These can be vegetables such as collard greens, kale, rainbow or Swiss chard or spinach. Some people also use fresh green herbs such as mint or parsley in their green smoothies to give it an extra fresh taste. It is a simple, healthful way to get large amounts of fruits and leafy greens into your daily diet and give your body the plant-based nutrients it requires.

Low in Calories

One of the most obvious benefits is that green smoothies are healthier than fruit “juices” that often contain artificial flavors and extra sugar. While they are low in calories, they are still very filling.

Immune Booster

Green smoothies have the ability to improve your immune system and protect you from getting sick. This is because they are chock full of high amounts of natural vitamins and nutrients. Two of the most prevalent vitamins in green smoothies are vitamin A (which promotes healthy vision) and vitamin k (essential to building strong bones).

Inexpensive

Buying smoothies can add up as they cost upwards of $6 but making one in the comfort of your own home can cost you as little as a few cents. As an added treat, buy your vegetables at your local farmers market. You will be helping a local business as well as keeping yourself healthy!

A Full Day’s Worth of Vegetables

Because it is blended, a green smoothie contains much more greens than can be found in even a large salad. This means you can consume more leafy greens and other vegetables in a faster, easier way without even noticing.

Energy Booster

The vitamins and nutrients found in green smoothies will give you a big boost of energy. In fact, they are a much healthier way to jump-start your day than a cup of coffee.

Recipe For The Perfect Green Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • 1 cup fresh Kale
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup mango
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 2 bananas

Directions:

  1. Add spinach, Kale and fresh mint into blender.
  2. Add ½ cup of water and blend until all of the leafy greens turn into a liquid.
  3. Add as much mango, pineapple and bananas as you would like.
  4. Blend again until you get your desired consistency.
  5. Enjoy!
