The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Skincare Routine

Trying to design a skincare routine that works for you can seem pretty daunting. There are so many products out there to choose from that it’s hard to know what will work for your skin and to know what each of those ingredients does for you. Today, we are sharing a few key tips you need to know to create a skincare routine that will give you the flawless skin you’ve always wanted. And it’s even easier to achieve than you thought!

1. Assess Your Skin

The first thing you need to do in order to create your perfect skincare routine is to assess your skin type. Is your skin: dry, normal, sensitive, oily, aging, or a combination of a few? Knowing your skin type makes it easier when it comes to selecting all the right products. Once you have the basics down (which we discuss below), you’ll be able to pick your treatment products based on the issues you’re struggling with.

2. Make Sure You Have the Basics

There are a few basics everyone should have in a skincare routine. Those basics include: a cleanser, a toner, a moisturizer, and a lotion with SPF. Each and every morning, you should cleanse the skin to get rid of any oil your body produced overnight, as well as any bacteria you may have picked up from your pillowcase. Follow-up with a toner that either adds hydration or absorbs excess oil, depending on your skin type. Then, finish off your morning routine with a skin specific treatment moisturizer. Get into the habit of wearing SPF every day to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Remember, you don’t want to deal with sun damage or early aging because you forgot to wear sunscreen!

At night, use a cleanser to remove the day’s makeup, as well as any bacteria, oil, and environmental pollutants that have built up throughout the day. By following this step with a toner, you can ensure that you have removed all traces of makeup before you head to bed. Nighttime is also a great time to use treatments such as serums and any other anti-aging products.

3. Target Your Problem Areas

As mentioned above, it’s important to assess your skin type so you know what issues you want to target when it comes to treating your skin. If you have dry skin, you will want to take extra care to add hydration back into your skin by using nourishing moisturizers. Those with oily skin will want to incorporate a toner to help reduce oil, but still use a lightweight moisturizer to keep the skin balanced.

Are you seeing the early signs of aging popping up? Make sure you invest in anti-aging products such as serums and eye creams to start battling those fine lines and wrinkles now.

4. Indulge in Weekly Treatments

There’s nothing like giving your skin a little extra pampering, right? Incorporating masks and exfoliating scrubs into your skincare routine can make a huge different in how your skin looks and feels. Try using a mask once a week and exfoliating once or twice a week to give your skin a little extra love.

For those of you who are struggling with oily or acne-prone skin, use a clay mask, which is designed to absorb excess oil and impurities, while clearing active acne. Are you noticing lots of clogged pores and feeling like your skin just looks dull overall? Make sure you’re exfoliating to get rid of dead skin cells.

And Remember…

Give a new skincare routine time to work its magic, as it can take many weeks to see full results. And if you stick with it, flawless skin will be yours in no time!
