Wrinkles might look cute on a Shar Pei but not on your face.
Your body produces collagen, which keeps your skin smooth and young-looking. As you age, it begins to slow down production. This leads to saggy skin and wrinkles.
No need to worry though, if you follow the simple steps outlined below, you’ll stand a better chance at keeping your skin looking happy and healthy as you age.
Wear Sunscreen Everyday
If you haven’t yet gotten in the habit of wearing sunscreen, you need to start! Make sure you are using a broadband, water-resistant sunscreen. Broadband SPF provides protection from UVA and UVB rays (both can cause wrinkles). Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days.
Quit Smoking
If you’re a smoker, you’ve probably heard this before. The chemicals used to produce cigarettes damage collagen and elastin’s, which are the fibers that make skin strong and elastic.
Use a Good Moisturizer
Moisturizing is key to healthy looking skin. Keep a bottle of face-specific moisturizer in your purse and nightstand, and then there is no excuse to apply the most important thing your face needs. You can apply without even having to get up!
Hydrate
We all know the amazing benefits of drinking water right? If you want a refresh, read here. Water does wonders for our skin. It helps keep your skin hydrated and cleansed, encouraging clear, fresh skin. By drinking water you flush out toxins and give yourself a healthy glow.
Sleep on Your Back
Did you know that sleeping in certain positions such as on your side or face-down, can causes sleep lines. That alone isn’t a big deal, but after many nights of sleeping in the same position, those lines can become permanent. The best way to avoid is to sleep on your back or opt for a silk pillow cases. Silk pillowcases are said to minimize sleep creases since they are softer and smoother.
If You Squint, Wear Glasses
We all know what we do when we don’t wear sunglasses. We squint to protect our eyes from the sun and so we are able to see. You do the same thing if aren’t wearing your contacts or prescription glasses. Why? You are forcing the skin on your face to crease and over time that can turn into wrinkles. So even on those days when you don’t think it’s that sunny, throw on the sunglasses. Plus, they provide additional sun protection for the most sensitive skin on your face.
Eat Antioxidants
Free radicals (unstable molecules that damage our skin – i.e. pollution & toxins) hate antioxidants. Vitamins A, C, & E, and beta-carotene are all antioxidants. Here are some sources of antioxidants:
- Blueberries
- Spinach
- Kale
- Walnuts
- Artichokes
- Cranberries
- Beans (red, kidney, pinto)
- Prunes
- Kiwis
