3 Reasons Why You Should Never Sleep With Your Makeup On

There is no question that we’ve all done it. After a long day we’re exhausted and one more step between you and bed can feel like the most daunting task – but sleeping in our makeup can cause major problems for our skin and our health.

Here are three reasons to push through and wash your face before hitting the pillow.

1. Clogged pores.

Leaving makeup, especially primers and foundations, on your skin overnight can cause blackheads and breakouts. The very products that we are using to mask our imperfections can actually be the root of the problem if we’re not removing them each night. How’s that for a vicious cycle?

2. Eye irritation.

Mascara, eyeliner and even eye shadow can irritate the sensitive skin around your eyes if you sleep in it. That gorgeous smoky eye that you finally mastered comes with a price if you don’t wash it off before bed, clogging eyelash follicles and oil glands causing small bumps called “styes” and even contributing to swelling and puffiness.

3. Wrinkles.

Sleeping in your makeup doesn’t give you skin a chance to recover from the day. Makeup holds on to free radicals and all of the environmental stressors that it comes in contact with daily so it’s extra important to give it a gentle washing in the evenings to eliminate those things from sitting on your skin. Without washing, collagen decreases and makes us much more prone to fine lines and wrinkles – another one of the very reasons we wear makeup in the first place.

To prevent myself from making this mistake, I like to keep makeup remover on my bedside table as a last resort. This ensures that at the very least, I’m removing the day and preventing it from doing any damage while I sleep. As a small reassurance, the occasional slip up won’t cause detrimental harm, but if you make going to bed a habit you’re sure to encounter more problems than the hassle of washing is worth!

If you still need convincing there’s Eau Micellaire from Yon-Ka Paris. “intelligent” water for expert make-up removal and thorough skin cleansing in one quick and waterless step.

Rich in Sea Lavender a potent anti-oxidant, Eau Micellare is also perfect for cranky, sensitive skin. In a single wipe, it gently captures impurities and removes make-up perfectly from the face, eyes and lips.

High tolerance: suitable for sensitive skin and eyes.
