If your skin is oily like mine, you want to look for an oil-free and non-pore-clogging serum or concentrate (usually labeled non-comedogenic). Breakout-prone faces will benefit most from serums and concentrates that include ingredients to fight acne and reduce redness or acids, like lactic acid, to accelerate cell turnover and improve skin texture. I apply mine after cleansing in the evenings and it really helps to keep my breakouts at bay, especially when I travel. If your skin is dehydrated, opt for something with hyaluronic acid – it’s the most effective moisture-binder for the skin. In the winter, I like to add in a serum that can be layered under my moisturizer for extra hydration. My favorite options also nourish and repair the skin, and will help prevent dehydration. The right hydrating serums or concentrate will feel like a drink of water to your skin and work with your skincare to keep your face at ease when it’s cold outside. Combination skin types can be tricky all around, but finding a serum or concentrate does not have to be a conundrum. Skins that need balance in their oily areas while also finding hydration for dry spots will benefit from a water-based serum or concentrate that targets both concerns. The serum or concentrate should work proactively to clear pores, normalize oil production and replenish dry areas at the same time. Finally, if your skin is sensitive, it’s no secret that you need to treat it with tender loving care. Use care when testing new products and look for a serum or concentrate with ingredients to calm and soothe while seeking out something to restore moisture and keep skin supple and resilient. Protectant ingredients like glycerin and vitamin B-5 hydrate and repair while helping to improve the skin’s barrier, leaving it less reactive. It’s amazing to see all of the ways that a serum or concentrate can work to improve all types of skin.
